Carjacking safety tips from police

Police would like to empower readers of Herald with the following tips with regard to carjacking, theft of, and theft out of motor vehicles.

* Keep doors, windows and sunroof locked at all times.

* Do not leave valuable items inside the vehicle.

* Use a steering lock, anti-hijack and car alarm system is strongly recommended.

* Park defensively. * After locking your vehicle, test it with your hands if it is indeed locked.

* While in town, at shopping malls or centers, park your car in the public parking.

* After you have parked your car, observe the area properly while in the car. If you observe someone strange, change your parking and inform the police.

* Stop giving unknown people lifts while on the road.

* If possible, avoid late night trips.

* Be vigilant at all times when approaching your the gate at your home and if you suspect someone walking near or in front of your yard, don’t enter, drive pass and alert the police.

* Always park your car in a enclosed area or locked garage.

* When arriving at your home, do not leave your car engine running while you opening the gate. Switch the engine off, remove the ignition key then open the gate. If possible, call a family member to open the gate when approaching your home.

* If possible, install an automatic gate.

* Don’t expose your car ignition keys to anyone to avoid duplication.

* If you have a puncture at night, don’t get out of your car before you scan the area properly.

If your safety cannot be guaranteed, don’t get out, leave the engine running with lights on and request assistance from anyone accessible to you or call the nearest police station.
