Tzaneen: Sonia finds closure with mandala art

After having been stuck on a cruise ship for nearly two months, Sonia de Wit embarked on a journey of closure using mandala art.

A well-known Tzaneener has recently completed a project that she took on for personal closure after being in lockdown in Italy and South Africa.

Sonia De Wit, a photographer, operates the Creative Learning 4 Life social media pages on Facebook and Instagram. To mark 100 days in lockdown, she coloured a mandala that included 100 positive words.

“It was quite a journey. I did this project to get closure and start a new chapter. As many may know, I was in Italy a few months ago and this exercise marked 100 days of closure,” stated De Wit.

De Wit was on a cruise ship from the Caribbean to Europe when lockdown started. The ship later docked in Italy where she and a friend were kept in isolation. After returning to South Africa, they had another period of lockdown. During the many days spent in isolation, the drawing of mandalas helped her cope with the situation.

“It has been a learning experience that has helped me grow personally. It took some time to adjust to life back home. I am sometimes more tired than usual but I am grateful nonetheless for the experiences that have been afforded to me.”

De Wit added that although she worked on the project by herself, she remains thankful for all the love and support that she has received. She said that she will be taking on a new project soon. She intends to travel to the coast to teach people the art form of drawing mandalas.

“It will allow me to meet new people and learn even more new things. I have been in contact with the people I will be staying with, so I am really looking forward to getting started on that.”

She added that she has also tried to make contact with some stationery providers, but due to the lockdown, she hasn’t heard anything from them yet. “At the moment I am also still just trying to adjust to being back. It has been slower than I thought it would be,” she concluded.
