Council checks local mine for compliance

The mine has prepared two houses where employees who wish to return to work will be quarantined for 14 days before they are allowed to start work.

The Mopani District Council, led by the Executive Mayor, Pule Shayi, said that it is satisfied with the Covid-19 systems put in place by the Stibium Mopani Mine.

Shayi told Letaba Herald this during a visit to the mine on Friday in Gravelotte. He was accompanied by the mayor of Phalaborwa, Merriam Malatjie and the Department of Health representatives. Roy Shikwambana, general manager of the mine, said that the mine implemented a hard lockdown with no employees allowed to leave the premises.

“We are pleased with their sanitising and screening methods,” said Pule. Malatjie applauded Stibium for their continuous support to the community of Phalaborwa.

“The mine recently donated food parcels to 118 households and we are grateful as a municipality,” she said.

Stibium also donated 2500 face masks to the Mopani municipality. The representative of the National Union of Mine Workers, Foster Mathebula, was present during the briefing.
