Parents and learners at Khudugane Secondary School at Roerfontein in Sekgosese are appealing to the Provincial Department of Education to urgently build new classrooms.
The call was made last week after the roof of one of the run-down mobile classrooms collapsed.
“Fortunately, learners were not in class when the roof collapsed,” said the chairperson of the School Governing Body, Navela Ngobeni, who described the dilapidated structure as a ‘ticking time bomb’.”

Ngobeni said as a result of the deplorable condition of the mobile classrooms, the 730 learners from grade 8 to 12 are crammed in seven classrooms built years ago.
The available classrooms accommodate over 100 learners each. He said four of the classes were built by the department while three were built by the community.
Ngobeni said they have written letters to the department requesting classrooms and the department has sent the team to assess the situation but nothing has happened.
“We are being sent from pillar to post by officials from the department and now they have stopped taking our calls,” he explained.
The Department of Education conceded that the building of extra classrooms at Khudugane was long overdue.
In a letter written to the school, the department said the school appears on the current priority project list for the construction of 16 classrooms, nutrition centre, administration block, 16 new environmental toilets, refurbishment of seven classrooms and 20 enviro-toilets.

However, it stated that the actual implementation of the project is subject to the availability of budget given the committed projects that are already under construction.
The school is situated a few kilometers from Lekgolo Primary School in Mamaila Kolobetona where two learners died last week after a wall collapsed on them.
