The confederation organizes CAF Awards each year. Sports fans can wager at Betway on who will be the next Men’s Coach of the year. In this post, we discuss the new CAF Coach of the Year.

Djamel Belmadi

Djamel is an Algerian coach who was born on March 25, 1976, in Champigny-sur-Marne, France. He started his football career in 1996 with Paris Saint-Germain. He played for Marseille during the 1997/1998 season.

The French club loaned him to Celta Vigo in August 1999. He later returned in January 2000. He secured a spot in the starting-eleven squad in the 2000/2001 campaign.

The former Algerian footballer replaced George Weah in January 2001 and he played as an attacker for the French club. He scored a crucial goal against Toulouse and helped Marseille remain in Ligue 1. Soccer fans can get more highlights at Betway about that season’s Ligue 1 relegation playoffs.

Belmadi struggled to get enough playtime at Marseille when Alain Perrin took over the club in January 2003. The new manager loaned him to Manchester City, where he joined Ali Benarbia. Djamel played his first game for City on January 29, 2003, against Fulham.

He made six substitute appearances and two starts for Manchester City. Marseille released Djamel in August 2013. Belmadi had several trials with Celtic, Sunderland and Wigan Athletic in 2005.

Southampton signed him in July and he went for the club’s pre-season tour in Scotland. At first, Harry Redknapp offered Djamel a one-month contract. He played his first game for Southampton on August 6, 2005. Harry extended the footballer’s contract up to 2006. Southampton released Djamel on June 30, 2017. He retired as a professional footballer in 2009.

Managerial Career

Belmadi coached Lekhwiya in a tough game against Al Sadd. The club promoted him as its head coach in 2020. He helped Lekhwiya win the 2010/2011 Qatar Stars League season.

Belmadi resigned from Lekhwiya after the club had a shaky start at the beginning of the 2012/2013 campaign. Qatar B appointed him as its head coach. He picked several foreigner players in the national team like Karim Boudiaf and Boalem Khoukhi after QFA allowed them to represent Qatar.

Djamel replaced Fahad Thani as the head coach for Qatar’s senior team. He helped it defeat Australia 1-0 in a friendly game on October 14, 2014. The Algerian manager helped Qatar defeat Saudi Arab in the 2014 Gulf Cup of Nations. Unfortunately, Qatar got eliminated in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

It lost three consecutive matches against Bahrain, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The club fired him on April 30, 2015. Lekhwiya appointed him as its head coach again on June 19, 2015.

The Algerian Football Federation appointed Djamel to manage the Algerian national team. The team shocked many AFCON fans when it made an exemplary performance during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 28th edition of the CAF Awards took place at Albatros Citadel Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt, on January 7, 2020. The list of CAF Coach of the Year award had several nominees including Djamel Belmadi and Aliou Cisse. Many Betway fans received huge payouts when Djamel won the Coach of the Year award.

He took Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
