TZANEEN: Security guards demand salaries

They went to the offices in groups on different dates to demand their money but some say they only received part of what is owed to them.

Scores of former security guards protested at the offices of MBS Security demanding their alleged outstanding salaries last week.

The guards who were stationed at various premises of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality from the beginning of June until the end of August say they have not received their full salaries despite being retrenched.

They went to the offices in groups on different dates to demand their money but some say they only received part of what is owed to them.

One of the former employees of MBS, Alpheus Bopape who had vowed not to leave the office before he got his money said every time he went to the office he was told to come back on another date only to go home empty handed.

“I have a wife and four school going children who all depend on me to provide for them. Today I am not leaving without my money,” vowed the loud speaking Bopape.

The manager of MBS Security, Moses Mabunda said the company was contracted to provide 144 security guards but the municipality is only paying for 106 guards.

“We had to stop 36 guards from working at the end of August after the municipality continued to pay them less than what they had agreed upon,” said Mabunda.

He said that due to the municipality’s failure to pay them the full amount, they were unable to fulfill their financial obligations to their employees.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala disputed that the municipality contracted MBS Security to provide 144 guards saying “We have an agreement for MBS to provide 106 security guards”.
