Letaba Lion's Club enjoyed their 50th birthday in honor of those that had come before them.

The Tzaneen Lion’s Club hosted their 50th Charter Dinner on Saturday at Arbor Park’s Sanloo Manor.

The event took place under a ‘Black tie and mask’ theme to which all attendants dressed to impress.

The evening took off with the MC, Lion Derrick Smith, giving a warm welcome of all the guests and media present.

After the invocation by Lion Brenda Lubbe, the pledge by Lion Sheri Botha, a few toasts in between and an induction of new members into the club to list but a few of the things that were on the evenings agenda, starters were served to the guests.

Shortly afterwards, a brief history on the club was given by Lion President (LP) Rodney Sabatier to which he spoke of the lengthy contribution that was made by the Robinson family from inception till present day.

This included walking down memory lane with the members of the club, speaking of the days where they were still running the club from the clubhouse at the Tzaneen Dam before it burned down and also making mention of the community engagements the club has taken part in.

“We have been part of many projects that have turned out successful. We got involved in the Modjadji area and the situation was handled very quickly. Under Lion President John Niels, when Hoedspruit was ravaged by floods, Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club stepped in. We were able to provide basic essentials like water and food to the Hoedspruit community,” exclaimed Sabatier.

He continued to speak on how the club got a liquor license before they could have toilets on their premises in 2004, which had the guests laughing at the idea of how they went about things.

“Sadly, our clubhouse in Jetty 3 burned down in 2010. But while we still had that clubhouse we hosted a lot of events,” he added.

The walk down 50 years of memories was accompanied by a slide show presentation of all the community engagements the club had been part of, as well as their events pictures, showing the excitement and joy that everyone had during that time.

The evening ended with a wine auction which saw bids being raised to as high as R5000 for a 32-year-old bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and as high as R6500 for a mid-week outing to the Robinson’s favourite getaway spot.

Letaba Tzaneen Lions Club vowed to continue being part of community engagements as they have seen many lives being changed through their efforts to help where they can.
