Mopani residents get an update on land claims status

Hundreds of Mopani District Municipality residents flocked to the Nkowankowa Community Hall to hear their land claims fate recently.

The objective of the meeting was for the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) to give an update on the status of the claims which was lodged between 1994 and 1998.

The occasion was also an opportunity to tell people who lodged claims between 2014 and 2016 that their claims have been stopped by the Constitutional Court after receiving a request from the Land Access Movement of South Africa (LAMOSA).

Some of the people who attended the land claims update meeting at Nkowankowa Community Hall.

The LAMOSA judgement entails that the court hold the processing of the claims lodged between 2014 and 2016 until the claims lodged between 1994 to 1998 are settled hence the delay.

However the latter claimants were given letters proving that they have indeed lodged a claim.

outside the scorching sun, one could not help, but noticed that some of the people in attendance were confused by the ocassion.

Some of the elderly people thought they were going to get their money.

Nicholas Magada from DRDLR told Letaba Herald that some of the reasons which causes the processes to be delayed includes, price negotiations, overlapping of claims and disputes which goes to court as the commission no longer has control on the claims once a case goes to court.

The claimants were also given a chance to ask questions from the department to get clarity on different issues which needed clarity.
