TZANEEN: Closure of library

Should implementation be completed before the planned date, the Library will reopen immediately after the programme is completed.

The Tzaneen library will be temporarily closed for provincial asset management project.

The Limpopo Provincial Treasury is implementing a state-of-the-art Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to identify and account for books in all the Provincial/Municipal libraries in the Province.

The Tzaneen Library will close from the Wednesday, September 18 to Monday, October 21 for the system implementation.

The Library Study Hall will, however, remain open and the free Wi-Fi will be available during this time.

The new system is said to be aimed at improving the efficiency of accounting for library book assets and to reduce the disruption due to annual stocktaking.

Combined Systems AssetX (CSAX) is implementing the programme on behalf of Limpopo Provincial Treasury, in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The Tzaneen district libraries were chosen to pilot the programme and the programme at the Shiluvane Library was the first to be completed and activated, followed by the Mulati and Letsitele libraries.

Books in all the libraries, whether belonging to the province or the municipality, are barcoded with RFID tags and the tags are linked to a complete record of the books, created by imaging/ photographing the books’ title pages.

From thereon, a complete RFID asset register for each library is created wherein books can then be scanned by using RFID scanners, which can verify multiple books at the same time.

This verification can be done without service disruption at libraries.

Libraries will not need to close for asset verification, as was necessary in the past.

Tzaneen library members are urged to return or renew their library books as close as possible to Tuesday, September 17.

Extended loan periods will be granted, and fines will not be levied for the time that the Library is closed.

Tzaneen library personnel expressed their regret for the inconvenience the closing of the libraries may cause and look forward to welcominglibrary members and users back on Tuesday, October 22.
