Tzaneen Dam level keeps declining

Figures on the summary of Water Management Area (WMA) for Limpopo reflects a decline compared to last year this time when water levels were 77.9% compared to the current 71.0%, Olifants Dam slightly increased sitting at 64.0% compared to last week’s at 63.5%.

In Vhembe District dams are bursting at the seams as they reached 100% capacity and beyond Vondo Dam remains stagnant at 107%, while Nandoni recorded 101%.

The community of Sekhukhune and the local mining industry are relieved that De Hoop Dam, their main source of water, is at 90.6%, showing a slight increase compared to last week when it was at 89.3%.

The area is known for its citrus industry and farmers in the area rely on the dam for water supply and irrigation.

Despite a steady increase in Limpopo’s dam levels, water consumers in the province are urged to continue using water sparingly.

In its weekly report, the Department of Water and Sanitation estimated the average dam levels at 66.3% this week compared to 65.9% last week. The report further stated that the Polokwane Water Supply Systems rose to 74%. The Luvuvhu Water Supply Systems is fast approaching its capacity at 97.9%, even though it dropped by 2% compared to the same period last year. Flag Boshielo has declined slightly from 76.4% to 75.8%. Ebeneezer Dam in Groot Letaba, which supplies majority of the communities around Polokwane, has increased slightly from 67.7% last week, to 69.1% this week. The Department also advises residents to report water leaks on time to the nearest municipal offices for a speedy intervention.
