The tooth fairy is in town in Tzaneen

Local dentists are keeping the childhood fantasy story alive.

The tooth fairy is in town and the dentists in Tzaneen are keeping the spirit alive by reminding kids of the ongoing childhood fantasy.

When a child loses their tooth, they should place it underneath their pillow and the tooth fairy or tooth mouse will visit while they sleep, replacing the tooth with a small payment – “A tooth for a treat”.

No tears here! Dr Anneri Vorster keeps Zandrei Horn calm before his check-up.

The tooth fairy is often connected to other gift bearing imaginary figures such as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. The tradition of imaginary figures is practised in various countries. Parents tend to view the tooth fairy fantasy as providing comfort for children in the loss of their teeth.

Research finds that belief in the Tooth Fairy may provide comfort to a child experiencing fear or pain resulting from the loss of a tooth. Mothers seem to value a child’s belief as a sign that their “baby” is still a child and is not “growing up too soon”. By encouraging belief in a fictional character, parents allow themselves to be comforted that their child still believes in fantasy and is not yet “grown up”.

Dr Solani Millicent Chauke a well-known dentist from Tzaneen, says she always encourages parents to tell their children at an early age that the tooth fairy pays a whole lot more for a perfect tooth than a decayed one.

The Tzaneen Dental Studio believes that every child should be in an environment where they feel safe and do not experience discomfort or fear before procedures.

Their fully equipped dental practice is child friendly and so very welcoming. They are big fans of the tooth mouse and the treats he brings. Edna Kirstein from Tzaneen Dental Studio said kids should always remember to write a letter to the tooth mouse and leave him a little bit of cheese to eat.
