The main objective for the event was for the hospital employees to interact with their patients

Van Velden Hospital hosted an Open Day event, recently which served as a means of bridging the gap between the health professionals and the patients in trying to improve the services of the institution.

Newly appointed CEO, Dr Johannes Selatla, said that the main objective for the event was for the hospital employees to interact with their patients and to explain how the hospital works and also to get suggestions from their patients and the community at large as to how they can improve their services.

The hospital currently has seven clinics which includes; Eye Clinic, Speech and Hearing Clinic, Ear Clinic, X-rays services, Dietetics services, Occupational Therapy services and Social Work services.

However, the services are only available on Monday to Friday weekly from 07:30 to 16:30 only.

The hospital works in conjuction with seven clinics namely; Moduba Clinic, Relela Clinic, Morutji Clinic, Madumane Clinic, Marapalala Clinic, Tzaneen Bus Stop Clinic and Greater Tzaneen Municipality Clinic, where doctors are assigned weekly to these institutions from Tuesdays to Fridays.

Patients who have been discharged from the hospital do their check-ups at these clinics.

“We are encouraging community members to utilise their local clinic services, because the nurses there have the same skills as the nurses in the hospitals.

“At the clinic, they will give you a referral letter to the hospital if your case is beyond their ability and also if you get to the hospital and we find that your condition is difficult we will also transfer you to other institutions where you can get the proper assistance,” said Wisani Tshuketana, Van Velden Hospital Media Liasion Officer.

Tshuketana added that the hospital takes the last round of files at 15:30 for consultation before it closes at 16;30. After working hours and on weekends and holidays they take emergency cases only at Casualty.
