Desiree new head of Mopani Constituency

Desiree is passionate about the poor and vulnerable and is determined to stand up for those who have been forgotten and is an activist for quality service delivery.

The DA is pleased to announce that Desiree v d Walt MP has been assigned to head the Mopani DA Constituency.

Van der Walt replaces Lindy Wilson MP who will be working in the Waterberg South district henceforth as Political Head. This comes after the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the DA in Limpopo made several changes to the leadership structures in several constituencies earlier in May 2018 in order to prepare for the 2019 National and Provincial elections.

Desiree joined politics in 1995 as a Ward councillor in Roodepoort and served as a councillor simultaneously on the Johannesburg Metro Council in 1995. She became a Ward Councillor again in Tzaneen during 2000 local elections.

She served as the DA Provincial Leader from 2008 till 2012, a Provincial Deputy Chairperson from 2015 till 2017 and as a DA Federal Deputy Chairperson to Athol Trollip from 2015 till 2018. Currently she serves as the DA Women’s Network Chairperson in Limpopo. During her tenure as provincial leader and as Political Head of Waterberg Constituency the DA won several wards from the ANC during elections.

Most recent during the 2016 local government elections two municipalities in her Constituency, Thabazimbi and Modimolle-Mookgophong, became the first two municipalities in Limpopo the DA won from the ANC where they co-governs Now with other Parties. They hold the positions of Mayor in Modimolle-Mookgophong and Speakers and Chief Whips in both these Municipalities.

Desiree became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 2004 as the first women in Limpopo from an opposition Party to top the Parliamentary list in Limpopo and served as the DA Shadow Minister on Arts & Culture and in 2014 as the Shadow Deputy Minister on Basic Education.

The Federal Leader of the DA, Mmusi Maimane appointed her as the Shadow Minister for Public Service and Administration which oversees all Government Departments, the Ministerial Handbook and the Public Service Wage Bill.

Desiree and her partner Manny de Gouveia reside in Tzaneen which is very close to their hearts.
