George’s Valley 4×4: ‘Another successful community event’

The routes were aimed at providing family fun as well as teaching people about the incredible environmental features that are on our doorstep.

Georges Valley hosted the 19th annual 4×4 trail on Saturday but it was not like those held in previous years.

This year aimed to be more family orientated, with the introduction of a 5km fun run and a mountain bike fun ride.

The trails took the 49 vehicle that entered through some beautiful scenery, allowing for those who entered to view the surrounding area from roads not usually accessible to the general public.

Four trails were laid out including:
Helicopter View – on edge of the Wolkberg Mountain
Mountain Hut Trail – On top of Wolkberg Mountain
Agatha Trail – Going through Agatha to the Wolkberg and last but not least,
Baccarat Trail – Not often visited by people but paradise to the Cape Parrot.

The routes were aimed at providing family fun as well as teaching people about the incredible environmental features that are on our doorstep.

All trails utilised were existing roads, so in order to preserve the environment, no new tracks were created and participants strictly stuck to the routes outlined.

Rona McGaffin, one of the event organisers, said, “We are very aware of the habitats surrounding us. The routes were well marshalled.”

When investigating the possible routes, it was brought to the attention of the George’s Valley Association (GVA) that invasive plant species such as pine are beginning to dominate the natural grasslands.

The GVA looks to help eradicate these invasive species in our conservation areas.

Back at ‘the hub’, there was something for all the family, including bouncy castles and inflatable slides, stalls, beer tent and a soft 4×4 obstacle course to test the skills of anyone wishing to take on the challenge.

An open-fire buffet styled lunch was served by Die Boskombuis as well as food stalls selling pap and kaaings, biltong and chip and dip amongst other delicious treats.

Additionally, the vibe was kept lively with live music from local artists such as Barefoot Breeze, G-mol Herstel and Jacques Mouton.

Rona McGaffin concluded, “We aim to support local so it was important to bring in the local bands. We are proud to have delivered another successful community event.”
