Tzaneen: Senior citizens celebrate their birthdays in style

"Age ain't nothing, but a number," this is what the members of Hanyani Pensioners Club live by.

The retired professionals celebrated all the members’ birthdays on Monday at Highgrove Lodge and Restaurant.

“Each year, we set a day to celebrate everyone’s birthday whether it your birth date was in January or is in December, so everybody today is a birthday girl,” explained Evelyn Shiluvana.

The two oldest and youngest members of Hanyani Pensioner’s Club; Anna Shikwambane (88), Carlota Mtebule (90), Agnes Mongwe (62) and Elisa Mhlong (61).

The Nkowankowa based social club has been in existence for the past 22 years and has been going strong ever since. Its main objective is to build relationships, travel together to different places, learn about healthy living and helping the poor in the community.

They have been lending a helping hand to different orphanages, where they recently bought pyjamas for orphans and they are also planning to donate to a local special school soon.

“We have travelled to places such as; the Portuguese Islands, Botswana, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg and our next trip will be to Swadini in October,” said Shiluvana.

The oldest member is Corlata Mtebule, the wife of the first Principal of Bankuna High School in Nkowankowa, DZJ Mtebule.

During the birthday celebration they participated in different activities which included, learning new songs, motivational talks and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The club currently has 40 members, the majority of which are former teachers and nurses.
