Borehole operators take their matter to court

The Borehole Operators in Mopani gathered in solidarity in the cold and rainy weather against the Mopani District Municipality at the Giyani Magistrate Court on Wednesday, April 11.

Their visitation to the court was in relation to their civil case of unpaid salaries by the municipality.

They claim that for the whole of 2017 they were only paid two months salaries and they were promised to be paid the outstanding amount in January, but to no avail.

In February, the masses gathered at the Mopani Disasater Management Centre in Tzaneen, where they drafted a memorandum with their demands which they submitted to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

Tired of waiting, the operators cut-off water supply to the villages for three weeks.

After the strike some workers were paid for the month of February and March.

The court hearing on Wednesday was however for two Tzaneen operators only and the masses are expecting to return back to court soon for their unpaid money.

After they left the court, they visited the district offices to enquire about their money and Mopani Municipality promised that they will pay those that have not received any money this year on Friday, but that did not happen.

The municipality could not be reached for comment. More on the story as it unfolds.
