Accident team kept busy with incidents last weekend

The misty and drizzly weather wreaked havoc on the mountain roads last weekend.

Thankfully however, the Haenertsburg Neighbourhood Watch (HNW) Accident Response Team (ART) were on hand, in their new kit, to assist at the scenes.

On Friday, no fewer than three accidents were reported on the R71 Magoebskloof pass. The first involved a vehicle losing control and ending up in the grass close to the garage.

Second saw a small truck lose control on the bend at the lookout point. Miraculously, the driver escaped with minor injuries including a fractured leg.

A truck lost control and veered into oncoming traffic before hitting the barrier.

During impact, the vehicle lost it’s load of tiles and tiling adhesive.

The ART team worked in dangerous misty conditions to keep the traffic flowing and to clear up the fallen load.

Thirdly for the day, a vehicle careered off the road into a deep ditch below Gertaways.

The ART volunteers are HNW members dedicated among other HNW duties to assist at accidents in the area.

Members of the ART often arrive first on scene and will start by making the scene safe for the injured, public road users and all other services.

Recently, they were provided by HNW with basic equipment like fire extinguishers, reflective vests, torches, triangles, popup cones, medical kits, radios, strobe lights, flashers, raincoats, gloves and contact detail of all the relevant emergency services to inform them of the services needed at the scene.

They cover a massive area of 1040 square km and divided it up in 6 sectors with each sector having its own committee.
