World Water Day: Tzaneen residents donate for Cape Town water crisis

An incredible amount of 3400 bottles of 5 litre quantities have been donated in total, summing to 17 000 litres.

A joint effort between a number of businesses and organisations in Tzaneen as well as the community has resulted in a huge donation towards the water crisis in Cape Town.

An incredible amount of 3400 bottles of 5 litre quantities have been donated in total, summing to 17 000 litres.

Whilst the city of Cape Town narrowly escaped the dreaded ‘Day Zero’ recently, which was pushed back until next year, the Cape remains in a critical water crisis, with dam levels at only 22% of capacity.

Volunteers with the filled bottles.

If Day Zero does arrive, individuals will be forced to queue at public standpipes to collect daily 25 litre rations.

Whilst the dreaded day has been postponed, the situation is still dire.

Residents are still under huge pressure to save water where possible.

The key players in the Tzaneen project are; Gift of the Givers, Tzaneen Care Centre, At-Pet Trading and Oasis Water, Tzaneen.

Together we can achieve so much.

Tzaneen Care Group together with Oasis Water Tzaneen did extensive marketing through social media platforms.

Some Tzaneen community members reacted to the marketing and donated ready made 5 litre bottles of water.

Meanwhile, other community members donated cash to Oasis Water Tzaneen as well as the Tzaneen Care Group.

The funds were used to buy 2500 5 litre bottles from At-Pet Trading at a reduced price.

Benestep and Blaizepoint Plastics kindly then donated shrink-wrap to wrap the 5 litre bottles in packs of two.

Volunteers from our community came together to label, fill and wrap the bottles at Oasis Water.

Every Monday, At-Pet Trading collected each week’s prepared bottles and stored them at their warehouse.

Gift of the Givers will collect the water from At-Pet Trading by the end of March to take through to the Cape.

The remaining monetary contributions will be donated to the Gift of the Givers Organisation to continue with the cause.

It is incredible to witness the community coming together for a worthy cause, Tzaneen at its best!
