UPDATE: No bail for petrol station robbers

Five men believed to be responsible for blowing up safes at petrol stations in Tzaneen and other areas in Limpopo appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court last week.

Chuchu Makhalanga (40), Thapelo Rakgabane (25), Andries Makwela (41), Ngoako Precian Morema (29) and Brian Khoza (31) were remanded in police custody following their appearance for business robberies.

Their cases were postponed to May 31 pending further police investigations.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said the suspects were arrested by a task team established after a spate of business robberies especially at petrol stations took place. Drop-in safes were blown up in a number of areas in the Province.

Ngoepe said among other criminal activities, the men were positively linked to business robberies at Sasol and Total  garages in Tzaneen, Caltex garage in Phalaborwa, house robbery and armed robbery in Namakgale, carjacking in Maake, attempted murder, house robbery and kidnapping in Ritavi.

He said that during the arrests of the suspects in Tzaneen, Seshego, Giyani, Polokwane and Mankweng the following items were recovered: VW polo car, large amount of damaged cash money, airtime vouchers, handcuffs, gloves, sneakers, clothing, three small plastic bags of drugs, one live 9 mm ammunition round, packets of cigarettes, cellphones, a South African National Defense Force jacket and cap.

All suspects will appear in various Magistrate Courts throughout the province for various offences.
