Marula season officially opened

The event led the annual official opening of the First Fruit Season 2018, to honour the cultural heritage of the Ku Luma Vukanyi.

The MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture, Onnica Moloi, hosted the annual ‘Luma Vu Kanyi’ event at the, Valoyi Vatsonga Cultural Village in N’wamitwa Village on Saturday, February 17.
The event led the annual official opening of the First Fruit Season 2018, to honour the cultural heritage of the Ku Luma Vukanyi.

Executive Mayor of Mopani District, Nkakareng Rakgoele, MEC of Sports, Arts and Culture in Limpopo, Onnica Moloi, Princess Tsakani Nkambule and Chief Tinyiko N’wamitwa the second, at the ‘Luma vu kanyi’ at Valoyi Vatsonga Cultural Village in N’wamitwa Village.

Moloi led the ceremony and aimed at promoting knowledge and awareness about the African Tradition associated with the golden fruit of Africa- Marula.
‘KU LUMA VUKANYI’, which serves as a build-up activity towards the annual Marula Festival in Phalaborwa, is also aimed at marketing province’s cultural diversity and heritage.

Like the previous ceremonies, the department provided thousands of litres of Marula beverage, which was consumed by the public during the event after the formal programme.
Chief Tinyiko N’wamitwa welcomed the guests in her territory.
She was accompanied by her daughter, Princess Tsakani Nkambule all, dressed in their Xitsonga traditional attire.

Traditional ritual time

Some of the distiguished guests included; the Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Nkakareng Rakgoale, Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municuipality, Maripe Mangena and Mayor of Greater Giyani Municipality, Sasavona Mathebula.

The guests were entertained by traditional music and dance from different groups.
The guests honoured the occasion by wearing their traditional attire and they were also served a Xitsonga traditional menu which included tihove, tsopi and maxoja.
