UPDATE: Learner (8) dies outside school gate after taxi tragedy

Just three days after the schools re-opened a learner (8) from Ritavi Primary School in Nkowankowa outside Tzaneen died metres away from her school's gate.

“It is alleged that a white Toyota Quantum was overtaking another motor vehicle at the Nkowankowa Public Road near the school, while the learner was crossing the road to the direction of the school.

“The little girl died instantly,” Sergeant Yvonne Moyana, explained.

The 22 year old suspect was taken from the scene by police to the Ritavi Police Station and was arrested but is currently not held in jail.

“The case is still under investigation, we are waiting for the post-mortem results and then the case will be taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for recommendations before we can make any charges,” said Captain Marks Shikwambana.

The Herald tried to get hold of the school for comment on the tragic event but they declined to make any comments.

On the other hand other community members were not pleased with the set up of the school’s street.

They say that the street is very busy in the mornings, because it consist of two other schools which causes too much traffic and if not dealt with it can lead to more accidents.

“The school has to find a designated parking area for school transport, to avoid further accidents,”  a concerned resident, told the Herald.

The Cluster Commander of Tzaneen, Major General Maggy Mathebula, is however condemning this and urges all motorists and pedestrians to be vigilant at all times especially next to Schools.

She further indicated that police are currently visiting schools conducting a back to school and safer school programme. Ensuring that school environments are safe for learning to take place.
