What do other employers do?
There is no golden rule or a standard practice when it comes to giving your helper a bonus or increasing her wages for Christmas. It is always tricky when you are an employer and deciding whether or not to increase your employee’s salary.
Most helpers only get paid the minimum wage, even if they have years of experience, so bear that in mind when making your decision.
Christmas is a time of giving, after all
However, it is completely up to you what you do at this time of year.
Many of us purchase a “Christmas bucket” (grocery hamper) for our domestic workers, aiming to help them with groceries over the festive season.
Do keep in mind that most employers will give their helpers something, so domestic workers will indeed expect a Christmas treat.
Again, it doesn’t have to be money or a very expensive gift.
I too have a domestic worker and I’ve already asked her what she would prefer for Christmas: groceries or more money.
With a smile on her face, she asked me for more money so she can save and buy school-wear for her child.
I respect her decision and decided to do just that. To many helpers, the thought of being appreciated is very important.
