GEORGE’S VALLEY LIONS: The facts!

Zander Osmers Jnr, the seller of the two wild lions that escaped from a trailer on the Georges Valley road would like to set the record straight after various false reports.

The story made national headlines after Dr Theo de Jager from Tzaneen witnessed the lions escaping from a moving trailer 7km out of town.

Three lions were being transported but only two managed to escape.

A large scale search ensued and both the lions were re-captured soon after.

The two lions was rushed to a vet in Phalaborwa to receive treatment and are recovering well, according to Osmers.

There seems to be confusion about a fourth lion.

Osmers, from Osmers Exotic Game Breeders, confirmed that the permit allowed them to capture and relocate four lions but they were unable to dart the fourth lion on November 26.
“The fourth lion is to be darted and relocated on the reserve before December 22,” read his report.
The three lions, in the meantime, have been successfully relocated to another reserve in Limpopo.
The lions was darted by a qualified vet.
“The four lions will be relocated to a large camp put together with rhinos. The purpose of this, is to protect the rhinos from poaching,” said Osmers.
Osmers added that a qualified vet darted the animals before they were transported.
