Numerous dead after Ritavi shootings

Two separate shooting incidents in the Ritavi area have led to numerous deaths, either from gunshot wounds or mob justice following a shooting.

According Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Lt. Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the first incident took place at around 22:25 on the night of Saturday, November 18 in Lusaka Village.

In this incident, a police constable, Ronald Maluleke, (who was 37 and stationed in Haenertsbuirg, but resided in Mititi Village) opened fire on five people, including his girlfriend and four members of her family in what is suspected to have been domestic violence related conflict.

The girlfriend’s father, Mishack Baloyi (53) died instantly when he was shot in the head.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found the constable dead with a gunshot wound and the firearm lying next to his body.

It had not yet been determined whether the constable had shot himself or had been shot by another individual.

The girlfriend’s brother, Pegeant Masondo (24) then died in hospital, on the evening of Sunday, November 19 succumbing to the injuries he sustained from the shooting.

The other three members of the family were still recuperating in hospital at the time of going to press.

The second incident occurred in Bridgeway Village in the early hours of the morning of Sunday, November 19 at around 01:45.

This incident saw George Shiburi (62) open fire on four men outside a tavern in the village.

Two of these men died from their wounds, while two were seriously injured.

Mob justice then ensued as a group of individuals attacked and severely injured Shiburi, disarming him in the process and disappearing with the firearm used to shoot the aforementioned individuals.

The surviving two men and Shiburi were then taken to hospital where Shiburi was placed under police protection out of fear that the community might return for him.

Shiburi then died in hospital from the injuries he sustained from the attack.

At the time of going to press, the motive behind the shooting was still unknown while the surviving two individuals were still in hospital and had not been identified.
