In articles titled ‘Was CIT heist inside job?’ and ‘Nkowankowa CIT heist, an inside job?’ published on the front pages of the Letaba Herald and Mopani Herald respectively, we would like to correct various inaccuracies in some statements.
The first correction needed, is that the security vehicle picked up money from the garage and three other locations, and NOT from the ATM, as was stated in the article.
Next, it was stated in the article that the driver had been shot, and this is also incorrect, as it was the guard behind the driver who had been shot.
The guard had been shot in his arm, with the bullet exiting from his hand by a freak shot that managed to pierce a space, less than 10cm in width, that the bullet travelled through to strike the guard in his arm.
He was admitted to and released from hospital the same day of the robbery.
The reason the vehicle had stopped after going onto the field after noticing the Ford Focus, was because the impact of the pavement led to the driver’s feet slipping off the pedals.
The guards had drawn their weapons prior to exiting the vehicle, as they were preparing to fire shots back at the Ford Focus.
The guards were not aware of the Toyota Hilux that had approached from behind, and were taken by surprise when they exited the vehicle to find the Hilux approaching from the left.
They also, did not willingly hand over the keys to the safe box at the back of the vehicle, and were forced to do so at gunpoint.
The article stated that the weapons used by the robbers were R4 and R5 assault rifles, but this has been correct by the guards from the security company.
From what they were able to see during the robbery, the weapons used were R5 assault rifles and AK-47 assault rifles.
Letaba Herald would like to further apologise for any inconvenience and damage caused to the security company by the articles that were published in the Letaba/Mopani Herald.
