MAGOEBASKLOOF: Birds & Forest Festival was something to ‘chirp’ about
The festival was aimed at promoting birding in the Magoebaskloof area, as it is extremely rich in birdlife with various species of birds in the area.
Limpopo Birding Routes (LBR) hosted a successful Birds & Forest Festival in the Magoebaskloof area.
The weekend kicked off with a gala evening and dinner on Thursday, October 19.
The festival was held in alliance with the newly re-branded, Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA).
An intriguing speech from Dr Warwick Tarboton more than wet the pallet for the weekend that lay ahead.
LTA’s Harris Rikhotso also made an appearance on the night, telling the guests about the importance of avitourism in Limpopo, who three years ago, held 50% of the country’s bird-watchers.
Some of the best places to go ‘forest-birding’ lie right within Tzaneen and Haenertsburg’s reach, particularly in the Woodbush Forest.
When trudging through the forests, with the forest floor crunching beneath your feet, the call of the Cape Parrot could be heard echoing through the treetops.
Despite the weather being rather dismal, the serenity of the Magoebaskloof forests and grasslands was enough to put any city-buzz’s heart at peace.
Countless species of birds were seen over the course of the weekend, which was undoubtedly one to remember for the 60-odd people who attended the event.
