TZANEEN: Learners sent away for not attending matric dance

The Grade 12 learners were locked out of school premises for not attending the matric farewell function.

Some of DZJ Mtebule Secondary School’s grade 12 learners were not allowed to enter the school premises on Monday morning when the school re-opened after the September holidays.

It is believed that about 42 out 172 learners only attended the event and 130 learners did not honour the occasion.

“We have been chased out of the school for not affording to pay R1 300 for matric farewell function. We were also told that were not suppose to put on hair-extensions but the others who are allowed to attend classes have the same hairstyles as us,” said one of the learners who was not allowed in the school.

Some of the learners said that they knew about the event from April this year but their parents could not afford to pay the money which excludes make-up and outfits.

“We went to the Nkowankowa Circuit Offices, where we were told that they can not talk to us because we are kids,” added one of the learners.

The department condemns the barring of learners from school. Currently as we speak, learners are back at school and everything is running as expected so that learners focus on finishing the fourth term of schooling without any form of interruption,” said Sam Makondo, Spokesperson of the Department of Education in Limpopo.

Letaba Herald confirmed that the learners were indeed welcomed back and began with their lessons.
