Local teen dreams to change lives

The moral decay of young people in the community of Bolobedu is a growing concern, but one determined youngster has big dreams to try and change this.

Benedict Ramalepe (19), a matriculant at Mandela Barlow World Agricultural High School, has aspirations to build a recreational facility leisure park in the village of Ga-Matipane in Bolobedu.

Having lost his mother at just five years of age, growing up without a father figure and brought up by his grandmother in a disadvantaged household, Ramalepe says he narrowly escaped a culture of crime and violence.

“The young people in my village are exposed to violence at a tender age and get involved in a lot of criminal activities,” says Ramalepe.

He further adds that the small community is marred by rape, teenage pregnancy, and substance abuse.

“Land has already been identified, I have teamed up with a few of my friends who are already furthering their studies at institutions of higher learning in Gauteng, and we have already initiated talks with the traditional authorities and local businesses.”

Benedict Ramalepe wants to make an impact in his community

Benedict believes the recreational facility will keep young people away from engaging in criminal activities and a life of violence, giving them ample time to focus on their hobbies and talents.

He says he plans on furthering his studies in engineering next year at a university of technology.

“When I complete my qualification, I plan on expanding the facility to accommodate an orphanage and drop-in center, as well space for young entrepreneurs to operate small businesses in.

“We are currently looking at various ways of raising funds and plead with anyone interested in partnering with us to come forward, and make this dream a reality.”
