Sapekoe hostel to be restored

Members of the Tsolobolo and Bakgaga Ba Maupa Beneficiaries Committee have taken it upon themselves to look after Sapekoe Grenshoek Tea Estate hostel in Politsi.

The committee which has lodged a land claim to regain the area in which its members claim to have been forcefully removed in the early sixties, hired workers to clear the bushes and renovate the houses at the estate. The chairperson of the committee, Sebaku Letsoalo said their main aim is to restore the hostel and the surrounding area to its former glory.

“The place used to be home for thousands of people who were working of Sapekoe Tea Estate until it was closed 15 years ago. The place has been deserted and we can’t fold our arms and do nothing about it,” said Letsoalo

He said the houses, shops, crèches, offices and entertainment places are dilapidated and the whole area is covered with over grown trees and grass. Some of the houses have been vandalized.

He said after the renovations are completed the houses and rooms will be rented out to raise funds for maintenance while waiting for Land Claims Commission to make a decision about the area.
