TZANEEN: Dust your winter-woolies as freezy weekend lies ahead

A frosty weekend awaits Tzaneen as the SA Weather Service issued a warning of possible snow in parts of the country from tomorrow.

A lovely cold and wet weather system is due to arrive in the Western Cape today, Thursday May 11 and move up through the WC, through the EC, and into KZN and Lesotho by Friday, with snow still possible during the early hours of Saturday morning in the easterly regions, according to Snowreport.

Tzaneen residents can brace themselves for a cold weekend as well, as the cold front will also sweep over our area, and temperatures are set to drop dramatically.

Whilst much of the country has enjoyed mild, sunny autumn weather of late, this is set to change fairly dramatically over the majority of the country this weekend.
‘Of particular importance for the general public as well as the farming community is a significant drop in daytime temperatures over many provinces, combined with light snowfalls over the Drakensberg Mountains, according to WeaterSA.

The frontal system still seems headed further south of the country.

As a result, we are not seeing any snow for the WC, and snow falls in the EC look like they will be confined to the EC Drakensberg and surrounding areas at this stage, with the exception of Hogsback, which could just see a light dusting on Friday, fingers crossed!

Jerseys out! But fluff on it….Suzelle to the rescue:

Friday morning will see the first snow falls over the EC Drakensberg, extending into Lesotho and the KZN Drakensberg by lunch time.

These falls will continue into the evening and through the night on Friday, and some falls could start appearing on the foothills and in towns close to the KZN Drakensberg.

Snowfalls in the KZN Midlands are looking unlikely at this stage although we are seeing light flurries possible in Matatiele, Kokstad and surrounds, with nothing likely to settle.

Make sure you warm up this weekend.

Snowfalls over the EC Drakensberg, the KZN Drakensberg and Lesotho are likely to continue into Sunday evening and Monday morning at this stage, and some heavy falls can be expected on the top of the Drakensberg.

There are a possibility of some snow depths up to 100cm over some areas of the Drakensberg for the duration of this snow event.

The Drakensberg will get snow right from the EC through to the northern Drakensberg.
