LIMPOPO: Malaria cases under control?

Rumours were going around that hundreds of patients in Nkhensani and Donald Fraser in particular filled the hospital passages waiting for treatment which was unavailable.

This year Limpopo Province has reported one of the highest cases of Malaria documented in recent years.

Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Limpopo Health MEC, on Tuesday (May 2) confirmed that about 624 malaria patients were admitted in hospitals around the province.

Hospitals which have been hit the most by the malaria cases are Siloam near Makhado, Donald Fraser in Thohoyandou and Nkhensani hospital in Giyani.

Rumours were going around that hundreds of patients in Nkhensani and Donald Fraser in particular filled the hospital passages waiting for treatment which was unavailable.

“One of our challenges with the supply of treatment is that we only have one international company which supplies us with the malaria treatment.

And the other outbreaks of malaria in other parts of Africa added to the delay in the supplying of treatment to hospitals.

This also affected private hospitals,” said Thabiso Teffo, Spokesperson of Limpopo Health MEC.

Teffo said that the department has started dispersing treatment to hospitals and as a result over 100 patients were discharged in Donald Fraser on Wednesday and they are hoping the same for Nkhensani.

“We can safely say that the of malaria cases are under control,” Teffo added.
