High alert as malaria cases increase in Limpopo

A high number of Malaria cases were reported in the North Eastern parts of Limpopo over the past week.

The department of Health spokesperson, Derick Kganyago said the increased numbers of cases were reported from the following hospitals: Siloam near Makhado, Donald Fraser in Thohoyandou , Malamulele in Phalaborwa and Nkhensani hospital in Giyani.

He said Limpopo is a malaria endemic province, with malaria transmission prevalent between the months of October to middle April.

“This year, malaria transmission has continued into April,” he said.

He added that the Department has activated teams in all these facilities to deal with the increased number of cases. Malaria supplies to treat malaria cases are currently being distributed to the facilities.

“As part of the Department’s continued efforts to rapidly respond to reported Malaria cases, additional malaria supplies are expected to be delivered this week. We appreciate the fact that community members are also responding to our call to report to their closest health facility if they experience malaria symptoms,” said Kganyego.
