TZANEEN: Talana residents receive food, clothes and blankets after blaze

Residents of Talana hostel who lost their shacks due to a blaze that burnt 150 shacks early March and killed two people were given clothes, food parcels and blankets on Thursday.

The shacks caught fire and burnt to ashes whilst the people were sleeping.

The donations were made possible through the partnership of the Tzaneen Cluster Commander, Major General Maggy Mathebula, SAPS Communication , Social crime prevention, Gift of the Givers, Greater Tzaneen Municipality, SASSA and other stakeholders.

Needy families from various villages also received clothes donated by South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), food parcels and blankets.

General Mathebula said it is their duty to take care of the needy and that it is an ongoing project.

The mayor’s office arranged for those who lost their identity books in the fire to apply for new ones free of charge at Home Affairs on Monday.

Acting mayor, Cassius Machimana, thanked the Tzaneen Cluster for reaching out to the residents of Talana hostel.

Representatives from SASSA, acting mayor, Cassius Machimana, one of the recipients, General Maggy Mathebula and representatives from Gift of the Givers.

“Thank you for looking out for those in need. We have also been helping them as Greater Tzaneen Municipality with tents and food,” Machimana said.

He added that they also reached out to the family of those who lost their lives in the fire.

One of the recipients, Samuel Mashaba said he is happy that they are getting all the help they need. “I am happy because we have food and blankets. I would like to thank the people who have been taking good care of us since the fire,” he said with a smile.
