TZANEEN: Meet our very own Neurosurgeon

Dr Sarel Spies has returned to Tzaneen to assist the community with his extensive neurosurgical skills.

He did his undergraduate studies at TUKS, and went on to specialise at Stellenbosch.

Though he wanted to come to Tzaneen, he was prohibited by the lack of neurosurgical equipment available.

Fortunately with the medical upgrades this year, Dr. Spies was able to join MediclinicTzaneen’s team of medical specialists.

The equipment refurbishments included the addition of an MRI scanner.

There are only three MRI machines in Limpopo. And with Tzaneen’s own scanner, we are now privileged to have access to the specialised neurosurgical treatment Dr Spies provides.

Neurosurgery is quite an innovation to the medical sciences.

It equips practitioners to perform extremely delicate surgical procedures on the brain and spinal chord.

Cancer, tumours, skull fractures, sports injuries, birth complications, degeneration due to ageing… these are some of the conditions that may require the precision and skill of a neurosurgeon.

Dr Spies says “most people will suffer from back or neck pain at some point in their lives, but if the pain starts to spread to other parts of the body, or if you feel tingly sensations or muscle spasms, there might be an underlying condition which could require surgery”.

With Dr Spies now practising in Tzaneen, community members have access to the best neurosurgical specialist treatment.

If you feel you might be suffering from a neurosurgical condition, consult with your GP for a referral to see Dr Spies.
