Tzaneen businesses turning into homeless shelters at night

"The biggest problem seems to be on weekends and holidays because we are not at work but we also tried to put burglar gates to prevent them from sleeping inside the postbox section.'

Many business organisations in Tzaneen are slowly becoming shelters for homeless people.

Letaba Herald received complaints from Tzaneen residents about people who sleep outside the Post Office and leave it dirty.

“The Post Office is a public space and it does not look good when at 07:45 there are people asleep outside a business place,” said the complainant.

Matome Mogoboya, Branch Manager of the Post Office, mentioned that this is a problem facing many other businesses in Tzaneen as well.

“In the past we tried to alert the police in the meetings that we hold monthly with our stakeholders, that they must help us by removing these people when they patrol at night. The biggest problem seems to be on weekends and holidays because we are not at work but we also tried to put burglar gates to prevent them from sleeping inside the postbox section,” added Magoboya.

He also said that they are in need of assistance from the police and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), in tackling the matter.

Neville Ndlala, GTM Spokesperson, said the municipality was not aware of the problem and that the post office must write a letter to the municipal manager asking for assistance.

Ndlala added that the municipality is always ready to help in any way possible.

Meanwhile Captain Moseri from Tzaneen Police Station, said that the police will start patrolling and maintaining the order around that area.
