K2C Biosphere rated 11th in the world

People living in the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere region are fortunate to be custodians of one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth.

The 2.5 million hectare Kruger to Canyon Biosphere region became a UNESCO (United Nations Educations, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Biosphere in 2001 and was recently ranked 11th best Biosphere in the world.

In a scientific review paper published in the prestigious Journal of Environmental Management (Elsevier), authors Chu van Cuong, Peter Dart and Marc Hocking rate the K2C Biosphere among the best.

The study found that the attributes that define successful biospheres are, stakeholder participation and collaboration, governance finance and resources, management and awareness as well as communication.

The study indicates that for success, the biosphere concept needs to be clearly understood and applied through landscape zoning.

Designated landscapes then need a management system which is inclusive of good governance, strong participation and collaboration, adequate finance and human resource

allocation and stable and responsible management and implementation.

Programmes are implemented through extensive collaboration partnerships, which is the cornerstone of the K2C’s vision of partnering to achieve a sustainable future for all life in the K2C Biosphere.

“To be in the company of the top 12 and ranked 11th as the only Biosphere from the African continent is an achievement that we want to build on”, stated Chairman of the K2C non-profit company board, DR. John Job.
