APK hosts Easter Service in Tzaneen

Sonja van Zyl will be the organist and Annelie du Plessis-Hoberg will play the flute.

Sonja van Zyl began her piano studies at the age of five with Ms Katie van der Merwe in Kroonstad. She passed the UNISA Gr 8 piano examination with distinction at the age of 15 and has been invited to take part in UNISA’s final bursary contest in Pretoria.

She obtained her Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree from University of Pretoria and studied with Philip Levy and Prof Joseph Stanford. While preparing for her Performance Licenciate, she received master classes from Konstantin Soukhoventsi. She also holds a Performer’s Licenciate (UNISA), a Vocal Accompaniment Licenciate (UNISA) and an Ensemble Licenciate (UNISA) with distinction. She obtained her MMus (Performing Art) at the University of the Witwatersrand under the supervision of Prof Malcolm Nay and Ms Pauline Nossel in 2015.

During her studies she received the SAMRO bursary in 2nd year as well as the Pretorium Trust Bursary in her 3rd and 4th years. She was a soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra and broadcasted a piano recital for a “Young Artists program” for SABC Radio. She took part in the 1st International Piano competition which was held at UNISA in 1982.

Annelie du Plessis-Hoberg

Annelie began studying music at the age of eight and obtained her BMus and MMus degrees from the University of Pretoria, both with distinction.

Since completing her BMus degree, she has performed professionally with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gala Pops Orchestra, Pro Musica Orchestra, Salon 5, MusicaCamerata and her own ensemble, the Poco Vivo Trio.

She performs nationwide as soloist, and also with different choirs. Since 1981, she has been lecturing at various colleges and schools. Currently, she is a full-time flute teacher at Roedean School in Parktown, Johannesburg.
