GIYANI: Body found in river after robbery

The body of a teenage boy was recovered on Sunday from the Ritavi river.

The police, assisted by community members, launched a massive search for the victim of an armed robbery who was allegedly pushed into a flooding river by two unknown robbers after he and his friend were robbed of R310 on Friday September 16.

The search comprises the search and rescue unit, police divers from Thohoyandou, the K9 unit, local police and community members.

The alleged robbery took place at Maswanganyi Village when Desmond Fantini (28) and his friend Tebogo Ngonyama (19) were on their way home in Mapuve.

‘Two suspects confronted them and demanded money at gunpoint. According to information, the two victims were then escorted at gun point towards the flooding Ritavi river and forced to cross. Desmond managed to swim across whereas Tebogo allegedly failed and is presumed drowned’, Brig. Motlafela Mojapelo said.

The body of Ngonyama was recovered on Sunday.
