Update: Lodge in Tzaneen robbed, guests held hostage

Three armed gunmen robbed a lodge in Tzaneen at about 03:00 on Monday morning September 12.

The suspects broke the laundry room open and got hold of the spare keys of the rooms.

They tied up the worker that resides on the premises.

The suspects proceeded to the rooms.

Guests from Botswana woke up when their door was unlocked.

The suspects entered and hit the female victim on the head with a firearm.

According to Marius Jacobs from Northern Security one of the  suspects was very aggressive and cocked the firearm in front of the victims.

‘The victims were  tied and forced into the workers’ room. Six other rooms were unlocked and the suspects took about six flat screen tv’s,’ Jacobs said.

The suspects fled in the victims’ vehicle, a white double cab Toyota bakkie, registration number B 875 AUP as well an undisclosed amount of money.

No serious injuries were sustained.

Police and Northern Security are still at the scene.

An undisclosed amount of money, flat screen televisions, toiletries, linen, cellphones and a double cab Toyota bakkie was stolen.

A worker on the premises got tied up according to Marius Jacobs of Northern Security.

The robbers then broke into the laundry room and took the spare keys of all the rooms.

Visitors from Botswana got woken up when the suspects entered their room and a woman was hit over the head with a gun.

“The one suspect was very aggressive and cocked a firearm in front of the victims,” said Jacobs.

They were tied up and forced into the worker’s room.

The three suspects fled in a white double cab bakkie owned by the Botswana residents.

The manager of the lodge, Frikkie van der Merwe, said the guests in the other rooms did not wake up when the robbers entered their rooms.

Also, they are very glad that no one sustained serious injuries.

This has been the third lodge in Tzaneen targeted by criminals in less than two weeks.

This particular lodge is looking at alternative safety measures to prevent anything like this happening again.
