Female Traffic Police donate classrooms to school

Eighty female Traffic officers contributed money to help build three classrooms at Silwersee Primary in Mieliekloof as well as donate school uniforms for the learners.

In celebration of women’s month the Mopani District Traffic Police Department together with the Correctional Service teamed up and adopted Silwersee Primary school.

This team was led by Principal Provincial Inspectors Unice Rikhotso and Unice Shikwambana; Gladys Masia of the Ba-Phalaborwa Provincial Traffic station and the Head of Community Corrections Tzaneen, Anna Moyahabo.

Following the contribution from the Traffic Department’s female officers and the donations from various stakeholders faced a challenge of not having contractors and therefore approached the Department of Correctional Services which assisted the with parolees that erected the classrooms.

“Education is the only weapon we can use to break the barricade of poverty, and it is evident that when you educate a woman you educate the community” said MEC for Transport Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana.

“It Touches me as a parent that it had to take female officers such a bold move to rescue the future of the African child” she further stated.

Farm schools face the obstacle of not having enough educators to assist in the smooth running of schools and the Department of Education is in the process of merging small farm schools so that they can be fully functional.

One of the major challenges Silwersee faced was that of learners from different grades being taught in the same classroom and this caused low literacy levels.

“These women understand that the government is operating on a limited financial budget and they felt obliged to assist the government, government alone can not do everything to satisfy the human needs” said Mapula.

The Principal of Leoma High school, Magomane Johannes from the Lepelle circuit made a donation of 100 desks to assist the learners.
