TZANEEN: Suspect caught selling a pangolin

A 34 year old suspect, David Chauke, from Venda was apprehended and arrested in Tzaneen for allegedly trying to sell a live pangolin for R50 000.

According to the police spokesperson, Sergeant Glenda Maimela, officials of Environmental Affairs caught Chauke after an investigation was done.

He was arrested on August 17.

He appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate Court on August 26 and was released on bail of R4 000.

The case was postponed to October 4 pending further information.

There are eight species of pangolin and they are endangered species.

In November 2010, pangolins were added to the Zoological Society of London’s list of genetically distinct and endangered mammals.

All eight species are classified by the IUCN as threatened to extinction, while two are classified as critically endangered.

Millions have been traded and killed in the last decade.
