Raising of Tzaneen dam wall to begin soon

The plan to raise the Tzaneen Dam wall has gone into the implementation phase and construction is expected to begin during the last week of this month.

The Department of Environmental Affairs approved raising the dam wall in September of 2011.

This was part of the Great Letaba River Water Development Project, which was developed to improve water security as well as remedy water shortages in the area.

Last November, after four years of review and amendment, the plan finally received approval from the Minister.

The project went into implementation earlier this week and construction is expected to begin during the last week of August.

Residents are informed that the demolitions project will not involve any blasting, however jackhammers and peckers will be used.

Dust and noise impacts can therefore be expected until the end of January 2017, but the contractor has endeavoured to minimize any inconvenience according to the Management Plan.

Demolitions will be limited to weekdays from Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 17:00.

Construction vehicles will also make use of alternative routes and back ways so as to avoid residential traffic.
