TZANEEN ELECTION: ANC wins but…

The African National Congress (ANC) retained control of the Greater Letaba and Tzaneen municipal councils following last Wednesday's local government elections.

The ruling party secured 52 Ward and Proportional Representative (PR) seats in Greater Tzaneen Council after winning 75,21 percent of the votes while in Greater Letaba council, the ANC got 46 seats after winning the votes by 75,59 percent.

The 2016 local government elections results show that the ruling party’s support in both councils has decreased as compared to 2011 elections in which the ANC secured 88,41% of votes in Greater Letaba, and 86,17 in Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

In this year’s elections, the ANC is followed in both councils by the new kid on the block, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) which secured eight PR seats after achieving 11,67% of the votes in Tzaneen and nine PR seats in Greater Letaba after winning the votes by 15,46 percent.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) came third and fourth respectively in both councils, winning seven Wards and PR seats in Tzaneen with 9.15% of the votes, while in Greater Letaba in the DA secured two seats with 2,78 percents of the votes. The DA retained Wards 14 and 15 in Tzaneen.

The DA’ support has increased in Tzaneen from 7,54% in 2011 elections to 9,15% in 2016 while in Greater Letaba the support grew from 0,3% in 2011 to 2,78 percent in 2016.

The African People’s Convention (APC) and Congress of the People (COPE) each secured one PR seat in Tzaneen.

COPE got two PR seats in Greater Letaba Municipal Council whilst the newly introduced, Limpopo Residents Association won one PR seat.
