UPDATE: Family jailed for witchcraft related murder

Five family members from Thomo village in Giyani were sentenced to serve jail terms ranging from 16 years to life imprisonment in a High Court in Thohoyandou for the brutal murder of a woman they accused of witchcraft.

Madala Nkuna (39) and Vonani Nkuna (24) were each given life sentenced, Ntokoza Nkuna (39) and Ernest Nkuna(27) each got 16 years while Christopher Nkuna(39) was sentenced to 20 years for murdering Katrina Nkovani (52) in April 2014.

The court heard that, the five assaulted and stoned Nkovani before dousing her body with petrol and setting her alight after accusing her of being responsible for the death of a younger member of her family who died due to natural causes. Nkovani later died in hospital following the attack.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba welcomed the sentencing and applauded the sterling work performed by the investigation team in ensuring the sentence.

He further expressed hope that the strong sentence will serve as a deterrent to members of the community not to accuse innocent people of wrongdoing and then brutally kill them.
