Light earthquake felt in and around Tzaneen

The council for Geo Science confirmed that there was small tremor at 02:37 on Wednesday morning in Tzaneen and surrounding areas.

The tremor apparently measured 1.7 on the Richter scale.

Christa Koekemoer posted on her Facebook page that she felt something like an earthquake and residents were quick to respond.

They confirmed that they either felt or heard it.

Hester Kinnear from Letsitele said that she was busy in front of her computer when she heard a rumble.

‘I heard something on the roof and I first thought that it could be a bush baby. It was not a train passing our house, which I thought it could  be because the railway line is not very far from our house. It was also definitely not the sound of a heavy vehicle. It sounded like thunder. I felt something move through the house and then I realized that it can only be an earthquake. It was about 02:38 Wednesday morning.’

Koekemoer said to the Herald that she felt and heard it at the same time.

‘My dog that always sleeps in the living room, rushed to my room during the shake, but was gone when he entered my room. I could still hear the roaring though,” she said.

She stays close to Letsitele, and told Letaba Herald that she could hear the sound moving in the direction of Nkowankowa.

Elaine Wright, staying in Agatha close to High Grove, said that she felt it too.

‘Small objects were moving in the house and I heard a loud roaring. It was definitely not the sound of a thunderstorm,’ said Wright.

A resident in Perry Joint Street, who prefers to stay anonymous, said she woke up with the windows rattling.

‘For about three to five seconds it was like music playing too loud in a car,’ said the resident.

Letaba Herald reported on a similar earthquake experience in Letsitele last year on August 14.

The light quake was measured 1.9 on the Richter scale, 5.0km deep and 3.3km wide.

The Herald is awaiting response from the Council of GeoScience.

A reliable source, however said that the Geo Science Council did confirm a tremor.
