HOEDSPRUIT: Baby rhino saved from drowning

Members of the Protrack Anti Poaching team in Hoedspruit, together with personnel from Moholoholo, saved a baby rhino from certain drowning earlier this week.

The Protrack team was out on their normal afternoon patrol in the Balule Reserve, when they found rhino spoor (belonging to a mother and calf pair).

They radioed the information in and was ordered the follow the spoor.

The team suddenly heard the sound of water splashing.

Upon closer investigation they, found a baby rhino which had fallen into a pool.

The baby rhino was trapped and although nobody could tell how long it had been trapped in the pool, the amount of splashed water everywhere led the team to believe it had been for some time.

They called for assistance and more members of Protrack as well personnel from Maholoholo raced to the scene.

After a massive struggle, the baby rhino’s saviours managed to rescue it from the pool.

Once released, it stumbled around a bit, before rejoining its mother and heading into the bush again.

Score another win for Protrack in their battle for the lives of our rhino population.
