PHALABORWA: Contract worker found dead at mine

An contractor employee of Phalaborwa's Foskor mine died in unknown circumstances at work on May 17.

According to a press release the Herald received from Foskor, the employee (who can’t be named until consent has been obtained from his family) was employed through the contracted services of Mafanato Lerato Enterprises at Foskor’s crushers section.

He was found lying on his back on the grating platform (with a visible wound to the back of his head), by other employees who went looking for him after he hadn’t returned from fetching a shovel.

There were no witnesses to the accident and the cause of death is still unknown.

Paramedics, the relevant managers and engineers responded to the scene but was unfortunately too late too save the employee.

A multi-disciplinary team, which includes the Department of Mineral Resources, will be investigating this unfortunate event.

“On behalf of the Executive and senior management teams, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family,” Ufikile Khumalo, President and CEO of Foskor, told the Herald.
