Help Palama Productions and Letaba Herald to make a film

A new initiative was launched to raise funds for the production of a full length documentary film about a rural Hoedspruit area cricket club's journey towards facilities, equipment and the sport of cricket.

Letaba Herald discovered The Oaks Cricket Club near Hoedspruit at the end of last year and has supported them ever since as a media partner.

Since then, a lot of wonderful things have happened.

The kids have already received the first delivery of equipment (with more on its way), a local citrus exporter is paying the kids’ coach, Cavaan Moyakamela, a salary so he can coach the club full time and practice nets as well as their own field is to be built in this year.

The Herald’s journalist, Hendrik Hancke and multiple SAFTA winner Niel van Deventer (the power behind recent popular Afrikaans movie: Dis ek, Anna) and his company, Palama Productions, started filming the club’s journey.

The idea was to make a short documentary segment which was to be used to promote the club and try to get them more funding and/or equipment.

After the first shooting weekend Van Deventer and Hancke realized they had something much more special in their hands and it was decided that a full length film had to be made.

In a time where transformation is a cornerstone of our sporting roadmap for the future, it is perhaps time for South Africans to stop focussing their attention on national sides and first get the grass root level sportsmen equipped and onto level playing fields.

Give the youth of today a bat and ball and the future of tomorrow’s star will sort itself out.

The Field of Dreams Initiative is an attempt to use the combination of local business and film in order to empower young sportsmen in whatever sporting code they take part.
