According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the young boy was swimming when the water overpowered him.
Ngoepe said members of the community were alerted and they responded on time.
The boy was rushed to the local clinic but unfortunately he was certified dead on arrival.
The deceased is identified as Remember Mkhari of Xihoko village.
“The South African Police Service is still calling upon members of the community to ensure child safety at all times, especially during these rainy seasons.
Community members and community leaders are advised to monitor the dams and rivers in and around their areas and when they found children swimming they must remove them due to heavy rains experienced recently to prevent these type of incidents. Child Safety is everybody’s business,” Ngoepe said.
An inquest docket was opened and the police investigations are still continuing.
