Truck driver trapped after accident

A truck driver was trapped for hours after it overturned on the R528 in George’s Valley Road on Friday.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, said when ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found a large truck lying on its roof on the side of the road while his slightly injured passenger was found walking around on the scene.

He said the passenger then told them that the driver was still trapped in the truck.

Paramedics attended to the man’s minor injuries while rescue workers tried to free the driver.

“Rescue workers struggled for almost two hours to free the man, having to use specialised rescue equipment. Once freed, paramedics found that the man had sustained serious injuries and was in a critical condition,” said Meiring.

He added that both men were treated and the critically injured man was provided with advanced life support interventions. Shortly after treatment, both were transported to Mediclinic Tzaneen for further treatment.

The cause of the accident is not known yet and investigations are ongoing.
